CONDITION
MIGRAINE HEADACHES
A migraine headache is a neurological condition characterized by severe, often one-sided throbbing pain, typically accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light and sound. There are various types of migraines, including migraine without aura, migraine with aura (involving visual or sensory disturbances), chronic migraines, hemiplegic migraines (with temporary paralysis), and menstrual migraines. The causes of migraines are multifactorial, including genetic predisposition, environmental triggers, hormonal changes, and certain lifestyle factors. Symptoms often start with a prodrome phase (mood changes, fatigue) and may progress to the headache phase with intense pain. Diagnosis is based on medical history, physical exams, and, imaging studies.

TREATMENT
BOTOX INJECTIONS
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) injections are indicated for chronic migraines. The diagnostic criteria for chronic migraine include:
-
headache on at least 15 days a month
-
Migraines cause at least eight of your headache days
-
Each migraine lasts four hours or longer
-
Migraine headaches are unresponsive to treatment with medications
Chronic migraines generally last longer and are more painful compared to episodic migraines, which occur 14 headache days or less per month.

When you receive Botox for migraines, the physician injects the medication into several key muscle sites proven to prevent migraines: Your forehead, the bridge of your nose, both temples, the back of your head, neck, and upper back. A small needle is used to minimize your discomfort during the injections. Your treatment only takes about 15 minutes, and when your session is complete, you should be able to get back to your daily routine.

Botox injections for migraine headaches are effective in reducing both headache frequency and duration for 3 months at a time. Often eliminating the need to take medications.
